Nebraska Police Memorial May 10th, 2021
Mar 25, 2021

March 24, 2021

May 9th, 2021 is the first day of Police Week for the United States.  Police Week is a time set aside for those who have lost a loved one in law enforcement, so that they may gather, mourn, remember and celebrate the lives of their family member and/or friend who made the ultimate sacrifice.  May 15th is Peace Officer’s Memorial Day.  A national day of observance that pays tribute to local, state and federal law enforcement personnel and corrections personnel who died in the line of duty.  In Nebraska, we too honor these fine men and women.

Last year the unprecedented pandemic forced the Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial Committee to have to cancel our ceremony.  After meeting earlier this year and continuing to monitor the status of the pandemic, vaccination processes and all applicable health and safety guidelines, the memorial committee is pleased to formally announce our plan to move forward with our annual ceremony to take place Monday May 10th, 2021 at the Law Memorial Park on State Fair Blvd in Grand Island.

Social hour will be 9:00am with the ceremony starting at 10:00am.  Unfortunately, this year we will be adding two names to the memorial wall, one from 2019 and one from 2020.

Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Jerry L. Smith Jr. died June 20, 2019 as the result of injuries he sustained in a car accident in Morrill County, Nebraska.

Lincoln Police Department Investigator Luis “Mario” Herrera died September 7th, 2020 after being shot in the chest by a fleeing fugitive on August 26th, 2020.

Jerry Smith and Mario Herrera’s names will be the 147th and 148th names on the memorial wall.  We ask to that you join us in prayer as we remember and honor Jerry and Mario, and pray for continued healing for their families, friends and brothers and sisters in law enforcement.

On May 10th we will also remember and honor our brothers and sisters who passed during active status, but not while on-duty.  Please also keep the families, friends and co-workers of these fine men and women in your thoughts and prayers.

The Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony is open to the public and along with your support and prayers, you are also invited to join us in-person to honor and memorialize our fallen brothers and sisters,  on Monday May 10th, 2021 at 10:00am.

Blessed Are the Peacemakers…
